Henna tattoos, also known as Mehndi, is another form of temporary tattoo. From a South Asian tradition, henna uses a paste made of crushed leaves of the henna plant, Lawsonia inermis. The active dye, Lawson, binds with the keratin in the skin, nails and hair. Traditional henna is drawn delicate patterns on the hands and feet, but modern henna is used in all models anywhere on the body. Unlike other forms of temporary tattoos, henna is not a full range of colors, only shades of red, brown, and near-blacks. The paste is applied and left on the skin for several hours to spot. The stain will gradually disappear as the skin sheds. Henna tattoos can last for days to more than one month, depending on the application and aftercare.
However, caution be taken as many products labeled henna misleading. Fast spots "black henna" may contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause allergic reactions and scarring.
Henna is a flowering plant used since ancient times to dye the skin, hair, nails, leather and wool. The name is also used for pigment preparations derived from the plant, and the art of temporary tattoo using these dyes. Moreover, the name misused for other skin and hair dyes, such as black henna or henna neutral, not resulting from the plant.
